Matt proposed. It was a random Monday night and we were over at Bradley & Shawnna's house just hanging out. Matt went to get "pizza" and wanted Bradley to go with him. I really didn't give it a second thought.
Shawnna and I were curled up on the couch watching "Dodgeball". Shawnna was all about the stupid movies (Mary Catherine Gallagher, etc). Halfway into the movie Bradley and Matt got there but Matt stayed in the car. Bradley came in and said Matt needed to go drop something off to his brother and he wanted me to ride with him. I was like, ummm, OK.
I had no make up on and we were both in very comfortable PJs. I had a sweatshirt on but Matt just had a t-shirt. I got in the car and Matt told me that Mark called and was at the Benton/Bryant basketball game and said he needed some money. That should have been my FIRST red flag because Mark would be the last one in the family who wouldn't be prepared like that. HA....sorry Monica & Matt.
We drove to Benton and made the block around the courthouse. The Benton courthouse is beautiful at Christmas. It is lit up with thousands of lights and it has this cute little Christmas gazebo on its front lawn. Matt looked at me and said he wanted to go look at the lights. Again, I was like ? OK...first of all, it is FREEZING outside and he just has a t-shirt on, but, I obliged. We didn't really walk around but instead we went straight to the gazebo. There was a family there taking some family Christmas pictures around the big Santa chair and fireplace (which was fake). I told Matt that we could go ahead and go since the people were there and he told me no that he wanted to sit in the Santa chair. So, we sat on a bench inside the gazebo.
Matt was shivering. I was a little warmer because I had a sweatshirt on. We waited and waited and waited. I kept saying, "Are you ready to go?", "Let's go", "You are freezing, let's just go". Matt wanted none of it. So we sat. And, we waited and waited and waited some more. FINALLY the family finished with their photo shoot and left the gazebo. As soon as the coast was clear, Matt and I walked over to the Santa chair and he sat down and sat me in his lap. In my head I was thinking, wow, I am freezing and all he wanted to do was sit in this stupid Santa chair? ha. We sat for just a minute and I said, "OK, we can go now" and I stood up. He stood up too but told me it was my turn to sit in the chair. Again, my thought was...Ooookaaay? So I sat...
When I sat down Matt was standing and holding my hand in front of me and then he got down on one knee...I was like WHAT! I am not surprised very often...but he totally got me this time! He said all kinds of sweet thing and I have NO idea, now, what they were. Of course I said, "Yes".
We had family and friends hiding in the bushes filming the proposal. They came running out screaming. It was a good night. The video was very dark and very far away from us so you couldn't hear anything so the friends and family made up the proposal conversation on the video...that was HILARIOUS. Thanks, Mark & Fawnda!! I don't remember who else was there.
Another funny thing was the family that was taking all the pictures were walking back towards the gazebo and saw all the commotion. They realized that we had just gotten engaged and they felt so bad because they took up so much time there. Ha. They took our picture and got our email address but they never sent the picture...oh well.
Anyway, can't believe it has been five years...Wow. Time flies. Happy Proposal Anniversary, Matt! I love you.
